The Digital Creator Economy

The Digital Creator Economy

content creator is responsible for the ideation and creation of content that connects a brand or entity to its prospective audience. A content creator is someone who creates original content for other people to consume. Whether its music, video's or blogs.

We have seen an explosion in the amount of content creators over the last few years. Why are there more content creators / digital artists than ever before ? Simple answer, the world is slowly but surely transitioning into a new digital age. Soon, your digital - online profile will mean more than your actually profile.

Why should someone spend 4 years going to College getting a degree they have no interest in and getting student debt when they can become a content creator, upload video's about their lifestyle and travel the world ? This is the reality of the world we live in. People can upload 15 second video's of their daily life and pay off their mortgage, while some people spend years chasing a degree to get a job they hate to buy a house they don't like and pay off their student debt for the rest of their life.

So the question you should be asking yourself is: Why isn't there more content creators ? The successful creators you see or follow represent a tiny fraction of the entire landscape. More people fail trying to become influencers / creators than succeed, however we just never hear about the ones who don't make it.

It's a false reality. It sounds simple and straightforward. Generate views and get paid. This is where it becomes a bit messy. Some people will do anything for views. Its addicting and controversy sells.

How do they monetize their content / creativity ?

The standard way most creators get paid nowadays is either through sponsorships and brand deals. Depending on what platform you use you can also get paid from how many views/streams your generate. The fact is that these social platforms are adapting their services to incentives creators to use their product.

Think about how YouTube started. It was a free product that allowed people to upload videos online. Now, they have creator programs in place which specifically look after creators on their platform. These people are  the backbone of the platform - They bring in the views, make the content and optimize the platform - and if they are not satisfied either financially or otherwise - everything crumbles. This type of cycle and partnership between these technology companies and creators creates a new miniature economy called the digital creator economy.

What are the main platforms they use ?

Short-form video - Tik Tok.

Long-form video - YouTube

Digital art / NFT's - Opensea

Lifestyle - Instagram

Each different platform has it's own set of advantages and disadvantages for creators. If you want to build a concrete - sustained audience and a loyal fanbase, youtube and instagram are the platforms for you. If your looking to show your content to as many eye-balls as possible in the shortest amount of time, tik tok would be your go to.

How do we see this economy / industry growing in the next couple years ?

People want a second source of income and freedom. Being a content creator gives you those two things. As more and more people feel comfortable sharing their information online and as the world becomes more technologically advanced, I have no doubt in my mind that the digital creator economy will be massive. It is a relatively new and untapped economy. The opportunities in this space are huge.

How to be heard in a noisy crowded space ?

One word. Authenticity. This space is extremally crowded and everyone is trying to do the same thing. What most people see is a glance at success but don't see the years of hard work. Build your foundations and realize its a marathon not a sprint. Most people want overnight success, but this is a long life. Don't sell out for the short-term. Focus on what you want to achieve in the long run.
